Understand the Section Shape
The digital SAT Math section has 44 questions across two modules. Module 1 is a broad mix of easy, medium, and hard questions. Your performance there decides whether Module 2 is the harder or easier routing. Both modules count, and about 75 percent of questions are multiple choice while roughly 25 percent ask you to enter the answer yourself.
Because the section is adaptive, a strong Module 1 opens the door to the harder Module 2, which protects your top score. Treat the first module as the most important 35 minutes of the test.
Tip 1: Master Algebra First
Algebra carries the largest share of SAT Math. Questions cover linear equations, systems, functions, and inequalities. If you can set up and solve these quickly, you bank a large block of points.
Practice translating words into equations. Many problems are word problems in disguise. Underline the quantities and the relationship, then write the equation before you look at answer choices.
Tip 2: Use Desmos on Graph and Systems Questions
The Desmos graphing calculator is built into Bluebook and available on all Math questions. Use it to graph equations, find intersections, and check your algebra. For systems of equations, graphing both lines and reading the intersection is often faster than solving by hand.

Tip 3: Handle Word Problems in Steps
About 30 percent of Math questions sit in a real world context. Read the final question first, then scan the text for the numbers you need. Ignore extra detail that does not change the math.
If a problem feels long, write a one line model. A clear equation beats rereading the paragraph three times. Circle the unit the answer must be in, since many misses come from answering in the wrong unit.
Tip 4: Review Misses Until They Stick
After each practice set, sort misses into two bins: careless errors and true gaps. Careless errors need slower reading. True gaps need a short lesson, then similar problems until the pattern is solid. Rework every missed problem from scratch a day later.
This is the step students skip most often. A miss you never rework will return on test day in a slightly different form.
Tip 5: Manage Your Time per Module
You have about 95 seconds per Math question on average. The multiple choice items are usually quicker than the student produced response items. If a question stalls you past two minutes, mark it and move on, then return if time allows.
Because there is no wrong answer penalty, never leave a student produced response blank. A guess has a chance; a blank has none.

Plugging in numbers also works for variable heavy questions. If a problem says "twice a number minus 3," pick a value for the number, compute the result, then find the choice that matches your result. This avoids sign errors and keeps you grounded in concrete arithmetic.
Tip 7: Watch the Units
Many misses come from answering in the wrong unit. If the question asks for hours and you compute minutes, you are wrong even though the math was right. Circle the unit in the question before you start, and check your final answer against it.
Rates questions are the usual trap: miles per hour versus feet per second, dollars per item versus total cost. Write the units next to your numbers so they guide the calculation.
A Word Problem Walkthrough
Problem: A train travels 120 miles in 2 hours, then 90 miles in 1.5 hours. What is the average speed for the whole trip?
Step 1, underline what is asked: average speed for the whole trip. Step 2, total distance = 120 + 90 = 210 miles. Step 3, total time = 2 + 1.5 = 3.5 hours. Step 4, average speed = 210 / 3.5 = 60 miles per hour.
Notice the trap: averaging 60 and 60 gives 60, but that only works because the rates here happen to match. Always use total distance over total time, not the average of the two speeds.
Tip 8: Flag and Return
The digital SAT lets you flag a question and return to it within the module. Use that. If a question eats more than two minutes, flag it, guess if you must, and move on. A hard item is worth the same points as an easy one, so protecting your time on the items you can solve matters more.
Return to flagged items only after you have answered everything else. By then you may see a faster path, or you may simply have more calm to think.
