Reading exponential growth as linear. A quantity that multiplies by a fixed factor each period is exponential even when the first few values look evenly spaced.

Work out the change per step. A constant difference means linear, a constant ratio means exponential, and that single check decides most of these questions before any equation is written.

- How do you tell exponential growth from exponential decay?
- Look at the base. A base above one grows, a base between zero and one decays, and the multiplier is applied to the value at each step rather than added to it.
- What does a negative leading coefficient do to a parabola?
- It opens the parabola downward, which turns the vertex into a maximum instead of a minimum. The vertex still sits at the same x value, so only the direction of the extreme changes.
- How many Nonlinear functions questions are on the SAT?
- College Board does not publish a count per question type, only per content domain. Advanced Math makes up about 35 percent of the Math section, which is roughly 14 of the 40 scored Math questions on a full form. Questions on this skill come out of that share.
