What the AP Chemistry Exam Covers
The course is built around big ideas such as scale, proportion, and quantity; structure and properties; transformations; and energy. You should be comfortable moving between equations, particle models, and experimental data.
Core topic areas
Expect questions on atomic structure, intermolecular forces, kinetics, thermodynamics, equilibrium, acids and bases, and electrochemistry. The exam also tests how you represent data and argue from evidence, so pure calculation is only part of it. College Board weights these across both sections, and a single free response can pull from two or three areas at once.

Science practices
The free response questions assess models and representations, question and method, representing data, model analysis, mathematical routines, and argumentation. You must show the steps that lead to an answer, and you should pay attention to significant figures. The readers check sig figs, and a correct number with the wrong figures can lose a point.
Exam Format and Calculator Rules
The multiple choice section has 60 questions and lasts 90 minutes. It is worth 50 percent of your score. Questions are either discrete or appear in sets tied to a stimulus such as a data table.
The free response section has seven questions and lasts 105 minutes, worth the other 50 percent. There are three long questions worth ten points each and four short questions worth four points each. On hybrid digital exams you view the questions in Bluebook and write free response answers by hand in a paper booklet. Show all your work in the booklet, because only that writing is scored. Build a Study Plan
Chemistry builds layer on layer, so a steady plan protects you from gaps. Here is a schedule that fits a school year.
Months 1 to 3: Foundations
Review atomic structure, bonding, and stoichiometry until they are automatic. Weak foundations make equilibrium and thermodynamics much harder, and I have seen strong students stall in the spring because they never mastered mole ratios. Write the setup for every calculation, not just the answer.
Months 4 to 6: Equilibrium and kinetics
Work problems on rate laws, Le Chatelier's principle, and acid base equilibria. Write out the setup for every calculation so the method becomes habit. Track the units as you go. The exam's free response mixing equilibrium with thermodynamics reproduces the course's cross topic style.
Months 7 to 9: Full free response sets
Practice entire free response sections by hand, including the long questions. Grade with the published rubric. The readers reward clear setup, correct significant figures, and reasoning, not just a final number. Trading graded work with a classmate helps you catch each other's missing steps.
One drill I rely on is the "setup only" pass: set up the equation for ten mixed problems without solving them, then check the rubric for which setups are right. This builds the method habit without burning an hour on arithmetic, and it is the part students skip. A student who can write the correct equilibrium expression cold will solve the long question even under time pressure, while a student who only practiced finished problems stalls when the numbers get ugly.
Practice Under the Clock
The free response section gives 105 minutes for 7 questions: about 23 minutes for each long question and 9 minutes for each short one, per the official timing guidance. Students who spend 30 minutes on question 1 and then rush the rest lose more than they gain. Practice the pace so the long questions get their due without starving the short ones.
