Cómo son las preguntas
One sentence from a passage with a blank or an underlined portion. Choices vary a verb, a pronoun, or the placement of a modifier, and some questions turn on a single word's form.
El error que cuesta puntos
Matching the verb to the nearest noun instead of the real subject. Long interrupting phrases hide the subject, and the questions are built on that distance.
Cómo resolverlas
Find the subject or the word being modified before you look at the choices, then test each choice against it. Reading the sentence with the interrupting phrase removed usually makes the answer visible.

Preguntas sobre Form, Structure, and Sense
- Do you need to know grammar terms for these questions?
- You need to recognize a subject, a verb, and a modifier, and knowing the names of the rules makes elimination faster. You never have to name a rule to answer, because every question is decided by the sentence in front of you.
- How are modifier questions different from the others?
- The modifier has to sit next to the thing it describes, so the work is placement rather than form. A choice that agrees with the sentence grammatically can still put the description on the wrong noun, which is the error those questions reward you for catching.
- How many Form, Structure, and Sense questions are on the SAT?
- College Board does not publish a count per question type, only per content domain. Standard English Conventions makes up about 26 percent of the Reading and Writing section, which is roughly 13 of the 50 scored Reading and Writing questions on a full form. Questions on this skill come out of that share.
