Rhetorical Synthesis au SAT
Rhetorical Synthesis gives you bullet-point notes from a research task and a stated goal, then asks which sentence uses the notes to accomplish that goal. Every bullet is accurate, so the goal decides the answer.

À quoi ressemblent les questions
Several short notes, a sentence naming what a student wants to do, such as emphasize a similarity or introduce a study's scope, and four sentences built from the notes.
L'erreur qui coûte des points
Choosing a sentence that is true but ignores the goal. Choices that answer a different question, or that add detail the goal did not ask for, are wrong no matter how accurate they are.
Comment la traiter
Read the goal first and underline its constraint. Then eliminate any choice that leaves the constraint out or breaks it, and check the winner against the notes for accuracy.

Questions sur Rhetorical Synthesis
- Can a note be wrong in a Rhetorical Synthesis question?
- No. The bullets are accurate by design, so the question is never about verifying facts. The only thing being tested is whether a sentence meets the stated goal using those facts.
- What should you do when two choices both meet the goal?
- Compare them against the exact wording of the goal. One usually overshoots by adding a claim the goal did not ask for, or undershoots by describing only part of what was requested.
- How many Rhetorical Synthesis questions are on the SAT?
- College Board does not publish a count per question type, only per content domain. Expression of Ideas makes up about 20 percent of the Reading and Writing section, which is roughly 10 of the 50 scored Reading and Writing questions on a full form. Questions on this skill come out of that share.
