À quoi ressemblent les questions
Two equations, sometimes with unknown constants, asking for a value, the number of solutions, or a condition that makes the system have none or infinitely many.
L'erreur qui coûte des points
Assuming every system has exactly one solution. Parallel lines give none and identical lines give infinitely many, and a large share of these questions tests exactly that.
Comment la traiter
Compare slopes and intercepts before solving. Equal slopes with different intercepts means no solution, identical equations mean infinitely many, and different slopes mean one. That check answers the question without the algebra in most cases.

Questions sur Systems of two linear equations in two variables
- Should you use substitution or elimination?
- Elimination when one variable has matching or opposite coefficients, substitution when one equation is already solved for a variable. When the question asks only for the number of solutions, neither is needed.
- What does no solution look like algebraically?
- The variables cancel and you are left with a false statement such as 3 = 7. If they cancel into a true statement such as 3 = 3, every point on the line solves both and there are infinitely many solutions.
- How many Systems of two linear equations in two variables questions are on the SAT?
- College Board does not publish a count per question type, only per content domain. Algebra makes up about 35 percent of the Math section, which is roughly 14 of the 40 scored Math questions on a full form. Questions on this skill come out of that share.

- Linear equations in two variablesThese questions give you a line in symbols, a table, or words, and ask for a coefficient, an intercept, or a point that satisfies it.
- Linear functionsLinear functions asks you to read or build a function whose graph is a line, and to say what its slope and intercept mean in a situation.
- Linear inequalities in one or two variablesInequalities ask for the range of values that satisfies a condition, or for the part of a graph where the inequality holds.
