Cómo son las preguntas
An expression plus a partially completed equivalent form with a missing value, or a request such as rewriting a quadratic in factored form.
El error que cuesta puntos
Expanding everything. When the question wants a factor, expanding turns a one-line answer into long algebra with several chances to slip.
Cómo resolverlas
Look at the form the choices take before starting. Factored choices want factoring, single-fraction choices want a common denominator, and expanded choices want distribution. Work toward the shape you were shown.

Preguntas sobre Equivalent expressions
- How do you match two equivalent forms with an unknown constant?
- Expand both sides and compare coefficients of the same power. The constant terms give one equation and the linear terms give another, and either is usually enough to find the missing value.
- What identities are worth knowing?
- The difference of squares and the two perfect-square patterns cover most of these questions. Recognizing a = a when the terms fit one of those patterns saves the expansion entirely.
- How many Equivalent expressions questions are on the SAT?
- College Board does not publish a count per question type, only per content domain. Advanced Math makes up about 35 percent of the Math section, which is roughly 14 of the 40 scored Math questions on a full form. Questions on this skill come out of that share.

- Nonlinear equations in one variable and systems of equations in two variablesThis skill covers quadratics and other powers: finding the solutions, matching an equation to its roots, and solving a line against a curve.
- Nonlinear functionsNonlinear functions asks about exponential, quadratic, and other non-linear relationships: how fast they change, where they cross zero, and which model fits a situation.
