Cómo son las preguntas
One short passage, then a question about the function of an underlined sentence or about the structure of the passage as a whole. Choices are descriptions of moves such as introducing a counterexample or restating a claim.
El error que cuesta puntos
Describing the content of the sentence instead of its job. Choices that paraphrase the underlined sentence are usually there to catch exactly that.
Cómo resolverlas
Label each sentence's job as you read, using words like claim, example, contrast, or conclusion. The question then becomes a lookup rather than a judgment call about tone.

Preguntas sobre Text Structure and Purpose
- What does function mean in these questions?
- It means the work the sentence performs for the passage: introducing evidence, conceding a point, narrowing a claim, or setting up a contrast. Two sentences can say similar things and have different functions depending on what surrounds them.
- How do you answer questions about the structure of the whole passage?
- Track the order of the moves, not the order of the facts. The correct choice usually names the sequence, such as a claim followed by a qualification, and the wrong ones either add a step the passage does not contain or swap two steps.
- How many Text Structure and Purpose questions are on the SAT?
- College Board does not publish a count per question type, only per content domain. Craft and Structure makes up about 28 percent of the Reading and Writing section, which is roughly 14 of the 50 scored Reading and Writing questions on a full form. Questions on this skill come out of that share.
