À quoi ressemblent les questions
One short passage of about 100 words, then either a main idea question or a detail question that points at a named claim, person, or finding in the text.
L'erreur qui coûte des points
Choosing a true statement over the right one. Wrong answers are often accurate facts lifted from the passage that answer a different question or cover only part of it.
Comment la traiter
Read for the point the author is making rather than for the facts. Then test each choice against the whole passage: a main idea choice has to cover everything the text says, and a detail choice has to match the text closely enough to survive a reread.

Questions sur Central Ideas and Details
- How is the main idea different from a summary on the SAT?
- A summary retells the passage in order. A main idea answer states the claim the passage was built to support, so it can be much shorter than the text and still be correct. Choices that retell details in sequence are usually wrong for that reason.
- Should you read the questions before the passage?
- On these questions it rarely helps, because the choices are full sentences and reading them first just loads four wrong ideas. Read the passage once for the point, then match choices to it.
- How many Central Ideas and Details questions are on the SAT?
- College Board does not publish a count per question type, only per content domain. Information and Ideas makes up about 26 percent of the Reading and Writing section, which is roughly 13 of the 50 scored Reading and Writing questions on a full form. Questions on this skill come out of that share.
