Cómo son las preguntas
An equation such as 3(x - 4) = 2x + 9, sometimes wrapped in a situation with a real quantity attached, such as a cost or a distance.
El error que cuesta puntos
Losing a solution by dividing both sides by the variable, and dropping a negative while distributing. Both produce a tidy wrong answer that is among the choices.
Cómo resolverlas
Distribute and combine terms before moving anything across the equals sign, then substitute your answer back into the original equation. The check takes seconds and catches most sign errors.

Preguntas sobre Linear equations in one variable
- How many steps do these questions usually take?
- Most are two or three moves: distribute, collect the variable on one side, divide. If you find yourself on a fifth step, a shortcut such as factoring out a common term is usually available.
- What should you do when the equation has fractions?
- Multiply the whole equation by the common denominator first, which turns it into the integer version you already know how to solve. Doing that before distributing saves the most error-prone arithmetic.
- How many Linear equations in one variable questions are on the SAT?
- College Board does not publish a count per question type, only per content domain. Algebra makes up about 35 percent of the Math section, which is roughly 14 of the 40 scored Math questions on a full form. Questions on this skill come out of that share.

- Linear equations in two variablesThese questions give you a line in symbols, a table, or words, and ask for a coefficient, an intercept, or a point that satisfies it.
- Linear functionsLinear functions asks you to read or build a function whose graph is a line, and to say what its slope and intercept mean in a situation.
- Linear inequalities in one or two variablesInequalities ask for the range of values that satisfies a condition, or for the part of a graph where the inequality holds.
- Systems of two linear equations in two variablesSystems ask for the pair that satisfies both equations at once, or, more often on the SAT, for how many solutions the pair has.
