Cómo son las preguntas
An equation in x and y, a described line, or a pair of conditions such as parallel to one line and passing through a point.
El error que cuesta puntos
Confusing slope with the intercept, and forgetting that parallel lines share a slope while perpendicular slopes are negative reciprocals.
Cómo resolverlas
Rewrite the line in slope-intercept form before answering, because most of these questions ask about m or b. When the question asks for an unknown constant, substitute the given point instead of solving the whole system.

Preguntas sobre Linear equations in two variables
- What does parallel and perpendicular mean for SAT questions?
- Parallel lines have the same slope. Perpendicular lines have slopes that multiply to negative one, so the perpendicular slope is the negative reciprocal of the original.
- Why does the SAT ask for a constant instead of x and y?
- Because the skill being tested is reading structure, not solving. A question that hands you a point and asks for the unknown coefficient can be answered by substitution alone, which is faster than isolating anything.
- How many Linear equations in two variables questions are on the SAT?
- College Board does not publish a count per question type, only per content domain. Algebra makes up about 35 percent of the Math section, which is roughly 14 of the 40 scored Math questions on a full form. Questions on this skill come out of that share.

- Linear functionsLinear functions asks you to read or build a function whose graph is a line, and to say what its slope and intercept mean in a situation.
- Linear inequalities in one or two variablesInequalities ask for the range of values that satisfies a condition, or for the part of a graph where the inequality holds.
- Systems of two linear equations in two variablesSystems ask for the pair that satisfies both equations at once, or, more often on the SAT, for how many solutions the pair has.
